Micronutrients to get pregnant

Iron: Iron is of great importance during pregnancy because high blood volumes are handled, but in addition, low iron levels have been linked to infertility, while balanced levels seem to decrease the risk of miscarriage. In the case of iron, it can be provided as heme iron, present in foods of animal origin, or non-heme, present in foods of plant origin. Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron, so it should be combined, especially with foods of plant origin.

Magnesium and Selenium: Like iron, magnesium and selenium are related to protection against abortions and against the appearance of fetal defects. The assimilation of the combination of these minerals is enhanced by calcium and vitamins B6 and D.

Manganese: A deficiency of this mineral can cause imbalances in the ovulation process, and could also inhibit the synthesis of sex hormones. Iron and zinc hinder the absorption of manganese, while vitamin C favors it.

Zinc: This mineral is of vital importance for the growth and normal development of the fetus. It acts as a co-adjuvant in numerous enzymes, being one of the main nutrients involved in fertility and whose deficiency can go unnoticed since it has no manifest symptoms. Folic acid and iron make it difficult to assimilate, while vitamins B6 and C may facilitate it. The intake of alcohol or hormonal contraceptives, as well as the excessive presence of fiber or phytates in the diet compromise zinc reserves. In fact, coffee, tea, and tobacco limit the absorption of the vast majority of minerals.

Co-enzyme Q10: It has been observed that this co-enzyme, a component without which other enzymes cannot function properly, is found at very low levels in women who have suffered an abortion, so its extra contribution could improve the fertility of women who go to undergo assisted reproduction treatment. However, at the moment, there are not enough studies to support it.

Essential fatty acids: They are those fatty acids that our body cannot manufacture and that, therefore, must be supplied through the diet. They are essential, within the omega-6, linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic within the omega-3. These acids, predominant in oily fish, are physiologically very necessary, since they participate in the creation of structures of the nervous system, being essential for the development of the brain of the fetus.

Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, with a variety of fruits and vegetables of different colors, protein and fat of animal origin in a limited way and a good proportion of complex carbohydrates ensures a supply of macro and micronutrients in the most appropriate amounts.
